Flight Training FAQs

Q: How much will it cost and how long will it take to obtain my private pilots license?

A: Flight instruction is paid on a "pay-as-you-go" basis. Using the US average of 65 flight hours to obtain a Private Pilot license, the investment required will be in the range of $8,000 - $9,000, spread over an 8 to 10 month time frame. Students who are more aggressive in the flight training and can fly several times a week will complete the program in less time and spend less money. When a student flies less frequently, he or she may forget some of the previous material, and it will need to be retaught. This becomes more expensive for the student.

Delmarva Aviation accepts cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Financing options are also available through Pilot Finance, Inc. Pilot Finance, Inc. has created a number of financing programs to fit your exact needs. Just apply, sign and fly!

Q: How do I research flight training options?

A: The internet is a great way to research flight training. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and Pilot Journey websites have many resources for the student pilot.

Q: What are the requirements to obtain my private pilots license?

A: The FAA Federal Aviation Regulations Private Pilot Requirements were written in the 70's and 80's before the advent of modern aircraft. Therefore the FAA minimum of 40 flight hours is rarely achieved. Most students require significantly more training to obtain the Private Pilot license. The US national average is approximately 65 hours.

Q: Why should I train at Delmarva Aviation?

A: At Delmarva Aviation, your instructor will patiently guide you through the flight training process. At the start of your training, your instructor will sit down with you, and discuss the syllabus for your training so that you are informed and can see the big picture. Throughout your training, you will receive feedback from your instructor on your progress.

Q: What is a typical flight lesson like?

A: A typical lesson ranges from 1 to 3 hours. At the beginning of each lesson, your Delmarva Aviation instructor will discuss the subject that will be covered in that lesson. Then you and your instructor will fly the aircraft to the practice area. Your instructor will demonstrate the item to be learned, and then you will practice the maneuver. After the flight has concluded, your instructor will discuss the lesson with you and will offer feedback on your performance. Your instructor will then schedule your next lesson and will assign homework to complete before your next lesson.

Q: What will be the biggest challenges I will face?

A: Many students underestimate the time commitment needed to successfully complete the private pilot curriculum. Ideally, the student can fly once or twice a week. In addition, the home self study course will require three to six hours a week.
